Article: Handling Change

by: Dr. Randin Brons, Ph.D., C.M.H., M.S.L.C.

Change is a very rampant and foreboding situation that inevitably happens to everyone. For a student, there could be a change in school, classmates and even a change of new environment. For an employee, a change of work or even personal accounts can be possible. For a child, a change of physical attributes and the like are in the offing.

To some people, this change brings about positive results – they look at the situation as more challenging and exciting, and they couldn’t wait to tackle it head-on. But there are some people who feel more than discouraged about the situation, who are afraid to ... Click here to continue.

The bottom line is that you don’t have to rely on an object or a person to make you happy. You yourself can be happy – you alone can be happy. How, you say? This doesn't mean you ... Click here to continue.

Article: Are You a Saver or Spender?

by: Angela Frisby, M.L.B.C., M.S.L.C.

It was a beautiful day as I unloaded my pitchfork full of manure into the wheelbarrow.  I had agreed to volunteer at a horse rescue center as a favor to my daughter, and also to get some much needed exercise.  After the first stall was clean, I moved to the next.  Younger volunteers sent me confused stares, and I finally realized that I was performing the worst job at the center – mucking the quarantine stalls.  I guess it was a rarity to see a parent get physically involved, especially at this capacity.  I, too, began to question my sanity.  At that moment, wisdom stepped quietly into my brain.  I realized that for me, this job was the most important.  Where I was standing, these beautiful, innocent creatures were given repose and hope to get well, or were offered kindness before dying.  Either way, it was a privileged area for me to work.

I began to think about the journeys of these lovely horses.  They’re all waste products of spenders – humans who go through life ... Click here to continue.

Article: Merging With a Plan

by: Michael J. Boyle, C.L.C.

I’m a very new certified life coach whose very new practice of coaching business people is challenging me to find the avenues with which to make myself known to clients. I am not new to some coaching with business people. I was a Human Resource executive for two successive Fortune 100 corporations for most of my career and I’m merging that experience and my coach training to bring that about as a business.

The challenge of merging is something we all encounter many times throughout our lives. It has variable aspects to it.  It can seem relatively easy or challenging or near to impossible to do in any given situation. Think about the instances, when driving your car, where you find yourself at an intersection faced with ... Click here to continue.

Article: It's February - Open Your Mind and Let Cupid Open Your Heart

by: Linda Walden, L.R.C., G.C.

As a people we crave for relationships. We search the world over and make a wish, whether it is upon a star, or through the magical Genie’s bottle, for companionship, love and acceptance. As members of the human race, we desire to be a part of something bigger than just ourselves. So what draws us to this connectivity with our fellow humans, and, hopefully, to our lover or life partner? What makes us connect?

Some people connect with food and alcohol. Many others connect with sex. Humanity craves that which is physical--we want to see it, touch it, and feel it. We wish to experience it. Relationships mean there will be mutual benefit to each party. We expect terms in our relationship to guarantee benefits. Regardless of the relationship, whether it is business or romantic, those terms ensure that we will receive benefits. It is when the terms are ... Click here to continue.

Article: Love - What is it good for?

Love, it is a feeling an emotion that we have all have felt at one time in our lives.  Yes, it could have been for a significant other or simply for a delish piece of our favorite desert!  I love my wife, I love the beach, I love chili dogs, I love that the Giants won and the Patriots are 18-1!  I love my friends, and I love coaching others and helping them to achieve their goals.

Article: The Seed

by: Sharon Sorrell, M.S.L.C.

I was not happy when we first moved to this small seaside town with my family last July. I had left behind my beautiful Saltspring Island home and all my beautiful friends, who so lovingly surrounded me for the past fourteen years.

It was very scary coming to what my daughter referred to as the end of the world, the farthest northern town on Vancouver Island — one of the most beautiful places I have ever lived and one of the loneliest.

Our small town made its living for many years on logging, mining, and fishing, and, because its economy is resource-based, has gone through many depressions. It has lived through mine closures, logging strikes, and disappointments one right after the other, including promises from the government that were broken time and time again.

However depressed my small town seemed on the outside, deep within its heart beat the true town — the living breathing community —filled with the people who greet me, a stranger, with a good morning and a how are you every time I walk along the seawall or into town. Filled with people like the school bus driver who stopped to chat with me about his daughters fight with cancer; the young woman on the first floor who is not only taking care of her own seven children alone, but her mother and her brother too; the young boisterous man who stopped me one day to ask me ...
